Essential Printing Terms Every Customer Should Understand

Printing terms

If you’re new to commercial printing, you’ll quickly come across terms that describe colors, paper, processes, and finishing. Knowing these terms makes it easier to request quotes, review proofs, and understand the printing process.

Color and Resolution

  • CMYK – The four process inks: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black.

  • RGB – The digital color model (Red, Green, Blue) for screens. Convert to CMYK for print.

  • Pantone (PMS) – A color-matching system for brand consistency.

  • Spot Color – A single solid ink, often a Pantone color.

  • DPI – Dots Per Inch, the measurement of image resolution.

  • Resolution – The sharpness of an image. High resolution = better print results.

  • Grayscale – Uses only black ink in varying shades.

  • Registration – The alignment of colors during printing.

Preparation and Processes

  • Prepress – Work done before printing: file prep, proofing, layout checks.

  • Proof – A sample for review before final printing.

  • Artwork – The original files used for printing.

  • Layout – How text and images are arranged on a page.

  • Imposition – The way pages are positioned on a sheet for correct folding/cutting.

  • Bleed – Artwork that extends beyond the trim edge to ensure full coverage.

  • Crop Marks – Lines showing where to trim a piece.

  • Digital Printing – Direct printing from a file, ideal for small runs.

  • Offset Printing – Traditional method for high-volume projects.

Paper and Finishing

  • Stock – The paper or material used for printing.

  • GSM – Paper weight (grams per square meter).

  • Coated Paper – Gloss or matte finish that enhances ink appearance.

  • Trim Size – Final size of a printed piece after cutting.

  • Binding – The way pages are fastened (saddle stitch, perfect binding, etc.).

  • Die Cut – Cutting paper into a custom shape.

  • Emboss/Deboss – Raising or lowering an image into paper.

  • Varnish/Lamination – Protective finishes that add durability and shine.

Why It Helps to Know These

Having a basic understanding of printing terms makes it easier to compare options, communicate with your print provider, and make sure you get the look and feel you want. It also helps you avoid surprises with paper thickness, color, or finishing so your project matches your expectations.
